"My light came around 29 years old" 🥲 📝: mgk went on The New York Times' Popcast. During this podcast interview with Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli, mgk recalled a childhood marked by poverty and bullying, saying he never felt safe or free to be himself until much later in life, ultimately finding light and a sense of self around the age of 29. "I grew up in a very, very masculine house," mgk said. "It was the type where I would come downstairs, and my dad would be like, 'You're dressed like a f-. Go change.' I was living in my aunt's basement with my dad, and it was really abusive. Listerine to this day triggers me so hard because I shared a bed with my dad, and he would always go and throw up in the morning and come back in the bed, and he would have Listerine on his breath. I had many years of being like, 'Where's my mom?' and he would have many years of saying all of these things. 15 years later, my mom and I, after he passed, we find this reconnection, and I end up learning all of these false narratives I was fed as a kid. Sometimes my dad would just bust the door open and bring all of the sh- in there. I didn't feel safe anywhere. That's why I lived in the attic because at least I could hear the feet coming up so I could prepare like 'Alright. It's about to happen.' I never had a chance to be who I wanted to be, and then you go to school, you're getting jumped or you're getting laughed at. I moved around a lot. I grew up in Africa till I was 6." "You speak Arabic?" Jon Caramanica asked. "I used to," mgk said. "It's a very complicated language to keep up. I came to America and kind of became a product of bullying because of how my body was formed at a young age. I was very tall when my mom and dad split. Poverty kind of ate up my clothes. I had an outfit. It didn't fit cool. Kind of acted goofy. I was obsessed with Jim Carrey. Everyone was just like, 'What's up with Ace Ventura over here?' Cleveland is kind of where my manhood happened. I experienced all of my adulthood things. Got robbed. Got my first job. Finally found a group of friends that I found some acceptance with." When Joe Coscarelli asked mkg if the dark period was in Denver, mgk said, "Dark Period was in Cleveland, too. The dark period kind of followed me. It was all a dark period, dude. My light came around 29 years old, 29, 30." 🎥: "MGK on Winning Over Bob Dylan, ‘Fumbling’ Megan Fox, Surviving Rehab & Going Pop on ‘Lost Americana’" on The New York Times' Popcast #mgk #machinegunkelly #colsonbaker @mgk
"Any interview of me in my 20s makes me cringe to the max" 😭 📝: mgk went on The New York Times' Popcast. During this podcast interview with Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli, mgk reflected on his growth, saying he has learned to embrace self-love, flaws, and vulnerability after years of playing into a hardened, polarizing persona. mgk described it as finally “adopting” his broken younger self. "I think what I've been missing is just like a love for myself," mgk said. "That's why I take that broken version of me, and I put my arm around him, and I say, 'Dude, I know we've went through the trenches together, but it rains before the rainbow.' I think also, too, the flaws are what makes us interesting humans." "Any interview of me in my 20s, I'm just like, it makes me cringe to the max," mgk said. "Also, you need the arc of like [from] dumbass [to] prophetic. I think there was a characterization that I was playing into, that I really loved being a polarizing figure, so I have a hardened shell. I grew up a battle rapper. I am prepped for war pretty much at all times, and we've watched me do it, but this is like... The truth is, it felt much more satiating to the broken boy that I have just now finally picked up, sat next to me, and I've been like, 'I'm adopting you,' to be the simpatico versus being the polarizing figure." 🎥: "MGK on Winning Over Bob Dylan, ‘Fumbling’ Megan Fox, Surviving Rehab & Going Pop on ‘Lost Americana’" on The New York Times' Popcast #mgk #machinegunkelly #colsonbaker @mgk mgk adopted his younger self ft. self love
