In 1929, Bertrand Russell wrote an essay called ‘Has #Religion Contributed Anything Useful to Civilization?’ where he argued that religion has been a source of ‘untold misery to the human race.’ Russell lists all of the various ways in which he thinks religion has damaged both society and the individual. Russell admits that religion was useful in fixing the calendar and for Egyptian priests to chart the stars, but apart from that, it's been no good at all. For Russell, religion is defined by its disciples and organisations. It's not Jesus's teachings, but rather the various Churches. It's not the Buddha, but rather the #Buddhist priesthood that came after. Just as the Buddha laughed at his disciples for thinking he was immortal, #Russell thinks that modern #Christianity is a long way from Jesus' teachings. Russell argued that religion promotes and amplifies two of the darkest human impulses: fear and hatred. Russell thought that people turn to religion because they are scared of the natural world and of death, and they stay religious because they're scared to leave. But Russell also argued that the distinction between ‘righteous’ and ‘unrighteous’ and ‘good’ and ‘bad’ is the source of so much hatred. He said this is how the ‘herd justifies itself in wreaking punishment upon the objects of its own dislike.’ It's sanctified violence. As Russell puts it, this is the ‘psychology of lynching. The conception of righteousness is to afford an outlet for sadism by cloaking cruelty as justice.’ Russell pulls no punches in his essay, but is he right? What do you think religion has contributed to society? #philosophy #atheism
