Elections decide more than leaders—they decide jobs and contracts. Other races understand government positions are job farms. If you’re the majority in a parish, your votes should decide who runs them and how the wealth your tax dollars create gets shared. That only happens if we vote in every election. This isn’t racist—it’s reality. For generations, people have benefited from leaders who look like them making decisions with your tax dollars, even when we were the majority. Different communities bring different priorities, but too often ours aren’t reflected in government. That’s taxation without representation—and it’s un-American. Take St. James Parish where we visited last week: a majority-Black community of 18,000 people with only one Black official elected parish-wide. The data is clear—when it’s two Democrats in a race, white Democrats overwhelmingly vote for the white candidate, and Black voters do the same. The difference? Only one group has a history of denying the other their rights.
