Three weeks before Christmas, a thousand American pastors flew to Jerusalem. Israel paid for the flights, the hotels, and the week. Bethlehem was six miles away. They did not go. They prayed at the Western Wall, laid a wreath at Israel's military cemetery, took communion in Gethsemane, and on the Friday stood in an amphitheatre at Shiloh, an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank, next to a Palestinian town where most families hold American passports. Six miles away, the mayor of Bethlehem had counted what two years of war had done to his city: unemployment from 14 percent to 65 percent, four thousand people gone, looking for work. Archbishop Atallah Hanna, on the day the week ended: "Their visit was not intended to meet Palestinian Christians, nor to visit the holy sites of Bethlehem as Christmas approaches." Jack Sara, president of Bethlehem Bible College, an evangelical like them, wrote to them the day before: "Your visit could have brought encouragement, solidarity, and healing. Instead, it resembled a pilgrimage to political power rather than to the kingdom of God." In Gaza that Christmas, about 580 Christians were left. At least 53 had been killed. On the first night, US Ambassador Mike Huckabee told the thousand pastors: "Now folks, if that's apartheid, Israel is really, really bad at doing it." In July the same man had stood in Taybeh, the last all-Christian town in the West Bank, after settlers set fire beside its fifth-century church, and called it an act of terror and a crime against humanity and God. Same man. Same year. One thousand pastors, six miles from Bethlehem, and not one of them walked there. Pastor Munther Isaac of Bethlehem keeps an open invitation for every pastor who comes to the Holy Land. Come and see.
