![[Singapore] Burdened with substantial debt owed to various creditors, including banks, credit card companies, and unlicensed moneylenders, 48 year old former prison officer Lim Wee Thong found himself in a dire state of mind. As his debts continued to mount, he spiraled into an abyss of increasing desperation, resorting to immoral and illegal means to obtain the money he needed to pay off his creditors. Lim's depravity knew no bounds. Despite being married and having a teenage son, he carried on multiple illicit affairs, one of which was with Ms. Loh Nyuk Moi, his girlfriend since 2010. In 2011, when Ms. Loh sold her flat and received a compensation sum of about $120,000, Lim saw an opportunity to lay his hands on the money. On February 13th, 2011, Lim met Ms. Loh at her former residence. Ms Loh was there as she had intended to retrieve the backlog of mail that had accumulated in her old letterbox. It was there that Lim Wee Thong viciously assaulted Ms. Loh, inflicting up to 10 wounds to her chest with a knife. As she collapsed to the ground, he callously left her bleeding in a pool of her own blood, taking her possessions and the murder weapon with him as he exited the flat. Lim then withdrew $14,500 from Ms. Loh's bank accounts and proceeded to the casino to gamble with the stolen money. Madam Loh's lifeless body was discovered in her flat on the morning of Feb 16 2011 by her brother and uncle. Lim was apprehended the next day at the Causeway Point shopping center, where he was accompanied by another girlfriend. He was charged with murder under Section 300 (a) of the Penal Code, which carries a mandatory death penalty if convicted. Lim's trial was interrupted when the prosecution introduced an amendment to the charge. Lim would now face the murder charge under Section 300 (b), which might spare him from the gallows. Eventually, Lim pleaded guilty to the amended murder charge and received a sentence of life imprisonment along with 24 strokes of the cane.
