@drdoireann: Dropping some sugar water on to the tongue of babies up to 18 months of age before a procedure like vaccination or a blood test is proven to reduce pain and stress for baby. The baby doesn’t swallow the water. It’s absorbed in their mouth. In the hospital, the sugar water came in preprepared pots but you can make your own at home too. Making a 30% solution means adding 30 grams of sugar to 100 milliliters of water. Add 30grams of sugar to cooled boiled water. Adding the sugar whilst the water is still warm helps the sugar to dissolve . Sugar water shouldn’t be given to baby in any other situation other than for a procedure like vaccines . A few drops should be given 2 minutes before the procedure and a few more can be given at intervals during the procedure . The analgesic (pain relief) effect lasts for 5-8 minutes. So how does this work? Taste stimulation stimulates the part of the brain that releases natural pain killers and thus reduces pain for baby . I’ve given my baby sugar water at vaccine appointments and found it so useful 👌🏼
