Is the day we die already appointed? Is it written somewhere beyond the reach of our choices—an hour that will find us whether we are lying quietly in bed or hanging from the edge of a mountain? Or do we carry some part of that day in our own hands? Hear me. There is a man whose life moves gently between home and office. He eats carefully, exercises, sleeps early and seldom places his body in unnecessary danger. Then there is another. He drives where roads disappear. He crosses swollen rivers in a four-wheel-drive. He leaps from bridges with a rope around his ankles. He descends into caves, climbs frozen mountains and dives into the remains of abandoned ships resting in the darkness beneath the sea. Can we honestly say that these two men live at the same distance from death? One swims near the shore, where his feet can still search for the sand. The other boards a boat, travels into the open sea, straps a tank of borrowed air to his back and descends into a place where sunlight itself cannot follow. Both men are mortal. But surely they are not equally exposed. And so the question troubles the mind: If the day of our death has already been written, can danger bring it nearer? Would the man standing safely on the shore die on the same day he would have died had he entered the wreckage beneath the sea in the name of scuba diving? Is death so obedient to destiny that even recklessness cannot summon it before its hour? Perhaps God knows the day. But God knowing the day does not mean that our choices are without consequence. There are things He has still placed in our hands. Wisdom. Restraint. Preparation. Discernment. And the frightening freedom to be foolish. A man may enlarge the possibilities of his life through wisdom. He may also narrow them by repeatedly placing his body where a broken rope, a failed machine, a loosened stone or one violent current could bring everything to an end. Faith does not make danger harmless. When Christ was asked to throw Himself from the temple because angels would surely preserve Him, He refused. He would not create danger merely to compel heaven to rescue Him. There is a difference between trusting God and testing Him. Yet safety cannot become the highest purpose of life. A man may spend all his years protecting his breath and still never truly live. Some risks are worthy of us: loving deeply, building what may fail, leaving the familiar, answering a calling, defending another person, beginning again after loss. Life itself asks courage of us. The question is not whether we should avoid every danger. The question is whether the danger serves something worthy. Does it answer a calling? Does it protect someone? Does it enlarge the soul? Or does it merely allow us to stand close enough to death to feel its breath—and mistake that trembling for being alive? Perhaps our final day rests entirely within the knowledge of God. But the road upon which that day finds us is shaped, at least partly, by the choices we make. We may not hold the hour in our hands. But we hold the road. And while destiny may know where the journey ends, wisdom must still decide how we travel.
