Using reference tracks is the one thing that helped me grow most as a producer—it’s way more powerful than any plugin or mixing trick ✨ These are the four things I’ve found referencing to be best for... 1. Sound selection is crucial but not always easy, especially if you’re working in a genre you’re less familiar with. Reference tracks can help you make better choices: listen to the sounds they use, then find or make similar ones. I also like using references to break my usual sound selection habits and try something new—maybe a snare sound I’d never choose, but it works well in the reference track. 2. Section contrast is basic arrangement, but something a lot of people get wrong. What changes in the reference track when a new section begins? 3. Transitions between sections are also basic arrangement, but it’s easy to overdo or underdo them. It’s a genre-specific thing too, which referencing can help with. 4. Referencing during mixing and mastering is essential for getting your tracks sounding competitive with others in the genre. It’s taught me so much about tonal balance, dynamics, and loudness in different genres. What you find is often surprising! My favourite mix referencing tool is MetricAB by @adptr_audio / @pluginalliance Hope this helps 💛 #musicproduction #mixing
