@theconversation.aunz: Do you need to wash your rice? 🍚 🤔 It’s an age-old kitchen question with myriad answers, so we asked Dr Evangeline Mantzioris (@University of South Australia) what the science says. Rice is traditionally washed to rinse off dust, insects, little stones and bits of husk left from the rice hulling process – but with the growing use of plastics in the food supply chain, microplastics are also something we may need to wash off our rice. And if you’re opting for instant rice, consider giving it a rinse. It contains more plastic than uncooked rice, but washing it rinses off 40% of the plastic it contains. 💬 Does washing rice get rid of its bacterial content, though? this makes no sense to me? How does washing your rice with micro plastic riddled water and cooking it in that remove micro plastics ?

Jason :
Washing rice also reduces the arsenic content by 10-20%, depending on how long and how many times it’s washed.

even better, soak the rice for as long as u can n then throw away that water before final rinse. this reduces the arsenic contained in all rice.

Exactly, as a South Indian who eats rice everyday we don't even eat basmati because it's not as healthy as short grain like ponni and Sona masuri
