A little road trip. A little author business. A whole lot of spooky joy. My Grim Festival photo dump, from getting to Stockton, California, to enjoying a day where loving haunted stories and witchy things felt like the most natural thing in the world. This book bruja had books to bring, people to meet, and apparently very little ability to act casual about meeting an author whose books had me hooked years ago. Because yes, I met Lauren Kate, author of Fallen. I read that series on my phone through the Kobo app before I even knew what a Kindle was or had the money to buy one. So getting a signed copy of Fallen and taking a picture with her? That was a moment for the reader I was long before I became a published author. There’s something about bringing your own books to a festival while also getting to be a reader. One minute I’m sharing The Ordinary Bruja, my Dominican horror novel about a woman who has tried to blend in until the supernatural makes that increasingly difficult. The next, I’m remembering what it felt like to disappear into someone else’s story and need the next book immediately. Both versions of me came to Grim Festival. Neither was particularly chill. 😂 These photos hold the getting there, the looking around, and the little moments I wanted to keep. Being an indie author involves so much work that happens quietly, by yourself. Getting out from behind the screen and bringing those stories into the world makes it feel real in a different way. And getting to do that somewhere that embraces the eerie, the strange, and the wonderfully spooky? Even better. If you stopped by, asked about my books, took one home, or spent a few minutes talking stories with me, thank you. Somewhere in this photo dump is an author who once read Fallen on her phone and now gets to bring her own haunting stories to events like this. I’m letting her enjoy that. Which author would have you forgetting how to act if you met them? #GrimFestival #TheOrdinaryBruja #IndieAuthor #LatinaAuthor #HorrorBooks
