The first time Namtan left, Film didn’t say goodbye. Not properly, anyway. “You’re really not going to look at me?” Film kept folding the same sweater she’d already folded twice. “I’m helping you pack.” “You’ve been folding that for ten minutes.” “It’s a difficult sweater.” Namtan laughed. Film hated how much she’d miss that sound. After six years of friendship, Namtan was moving to London for her dream job. Film had encouraged her to take it. She’d even helped with the application. So why did it feel like someone was pulling the ground out from beneath her? “You’ll visit, right?” Namtan asked. “Obviously.” “And call?” “Unfortunately.” “And miss me?” Film finally looked up. There it was. That stupid smile she’d fallen in love with somewhere between late-night study sessions and lazy Sunday mornings. “Don’t push it.” Namtan’s smile faltered. “Sometimes I can’t tell if you actually want me around.” Film stared at her. “What?” “You’ve barely spoken to me all week.” “Because you’re leaving.” “I know I’m leaving, Film.” “Then why are you acting like everything’s normal?” Namtan looked away. “Because I wanted one last normal day with you.” Film wanted to apologize. Instead, she said, “Maybe you should’ve asked someone else.” Namtan went still. Then nodded. “Okay.” At 8:17 p.m., Namtan left for the airport. Film watched the taxi disappear. She didn’t call. Didn’t text. She went home, crawled into bed, and wished she could have that day back. Apparently, something heard her. ——— Friday. 7:03 a.m. Film woke to her alarm. Her phone buzzed. Namtan: morning sleepyhead Namtan: still coming over at noon? Film blinked. That was yesterday’s message. She checked the date. Friday. Impossible. She called Namtan. “Hello?” “Namtan? Where are you?” “In bed?” “You’re not on the plane?” “Film, my flight’s tonight.” Film stared at the wall. “Oh.” “Are you okay?” “…Define okay.” ——— By the third Friday, Film had accepted two things. One: she was stuck in a time loop. Two: the universe had a terrible sense of humor. On Friday four, she predicted View spilling coffee on herself at 9:12 a.m. On Friday six, she bought a lottery ticket. Wrong numbers. Apparently, the universe had rules. On Friday eight, she convinced Namtan to skip packing and spend the afternoon at an arcade. They laughed until their cheeks hurt. At 8:17, Namtan still left. On Friday eleven, Film told her everything. The repeated days. The alarm. The coffee. The airport. Namtan listened, then asked if she’d been sleeping enough. By Friday fifteen, Film stopped trying to explain. “Just one more day,” she begged. Namtan squeezed her hand. “You know I would if I could.” Film almost laughed. If only she knew.
