Tapered Wheel Bearing - Correct Installation and Assembly. • Mercedes-Benz C-Class W204 - tapered wheel bearing replacement. In this video, we work on a Mercedes-Benz C-Class W204 undergoing a major front suspension repair. One of the components requiring replacement is the wheel bearing assembly. • This particular hub uses two tapered roller bearings, an inner and an outer bearing. Correct installation is extremely important: the bearing races must be pressed into the hub correctly, the bearings must be properly packed with grease and the complete hub assembly must be assembled correctly. • I’ll show the complete Mercedes W204 tapered wheel bearing replacement step by step, including removing the old bearings, removing the bearing races, cleaning the hub, installing the new races and assembling the new bearings. • Special attention is required when installing the inner wheel bearing seal. This is not a standard oil seal. It contains an integrated magnetic ABS encoder ring, which is used by the wheel speed sensor. • Because of this, the seal must be installed in the correct orientation and pressed in carefully. Damaging or incorrectly installing the magnetic encoder can cause ABS or wheel speed sensor problems. • I’ll also show the special tool used to check the magnetic ABS encoder ring after installation. • Another important part of the procedure is correctly packing the tapered roller bearings with grease. Grease needs to be forced between the rollers, cage and inner race so that the entire bearing is properly lubricated. • After installing the new bearings, races and seals, the hub is assembled and prepared for installation back onto the vehicle. • But the job doesn’t end here.
