@yearofthedurian: Durian Lemang is the most delicious way to eat rice! Correct me if I’m wrong 😅 I was so excited when I saw @kuphi_teungku setting up the fire to cook lemang outside the @duriantraveler Durian Competition in Calang, and even more excited once I realized it was meant to be paired with durian! I immediately bought one stick to try. Lemang is short-grained sticky rice, called Beras, mixed with coconut milk and salt and boiled inside of a bamboo tube stuffed with a leaf. The leaf is taken from different plants depending on what’s available. It infuses the rice with an herbal aroma and umami that is absolutely delicious. When the durian was open and the lemang was chopped into circles, everyone around us got their phones out to film the foreigners tasting durian lemang for the first time. I got stage fright! I didn’t know how to eat the lemang and durian together. I didn’t want to do it wrong on video! Thanks to Dara, Najwa, and the other kids in Calang who stepped in to show us the proper way to eat Durian Lemang.
