Sep 22, 2026 A major new security agreement has been signed by the United States, Denmark and Greenland at the United Nations in New York. The pact expands the US military presence in Greenland while leaving the island within the Kingdom of Denmark. President Donald Trump signed the agreement with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen on September 22, 2026. The agreement supplements the 1951 US Denmark defense arrangement and allows the United States to expand Pituffik Space Base and establish two additional military sites at Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and Mestersvig on the east coast. The agreement also provides broad rights for US aircraft and vessels to operate across Greenland and its territorial waters and allows a Golden Dome defense system.
