I just test the highest and lowest sections of the song and see what works. If they work, then the rest should be fine

I would also recommend look at the vocal range of the song : is it E3-A5 for example and your voice ranges from G2- G4 when it sounds it best, I would

smart approach. I used to go up by semitones on the whole song, and currently struggling making decisions with one song. Am gonna try this approach!!
