My mom “puzzled” during my childhood years. I remember her setting up a card table in front of the fireplace. She’d wrap herself in a blanket with her arms reaching out like a dinosaur and she’d puzzle until she went to bed. When I left home we didn’t live near each other and rarely saw each other for 10 years. Although my mom puzzled during that time, I didn’t see the artwork. In 2000 my parents relocated and live near me now in the low desert. They moved here after Sara was born. They say they wanted to retire someplace warm but everyone knows that’s a straight lie. They moved her for her - the astonishing baby girl that would become their only grandchild. The three of them are TIGHT! They have their own language and their own relationship that isn’t tied to me. They maintain it. They nurture it. I’ve watched it evolve over the year and it fills me with joy watching them love each other on their terms. I remember my daughter helping my mom puzzle at a young age so naturally as an adult (she is 26), my daughter is into puzzling. She puts together some beautiful pieces - mythical, dark, gothic - rich colors. Stunning. My mom still puzzles on and off — in fact there are a few shellacked art pieces on display in the garage - fun ones - beer bottles, bottle caps. And there are about 20 brand new, still in the plastic wrap, puzzles on the top shelf in the guest room closet just ready to be assembled. I asked for a couple to assemble - thought maybe I’d take a break from sewing, hiking, murder bingeing and shopping to experience puzzling. “No,” she said without hesitation, “Get your own.” Yes it was said in that ‘are you insane’ tone. One day not long ago my daughter came home from grandma’s house with a puzzle. Surely she must have stolen that. Slipped it into her bag before she left grandma’s house (we steal from my parents on the regular). I know she took it on the down low. As I was about to ask for the story of the theft, my daughter holds up the puzzle and says enthusiastically, “Look what grandma gave me!” And that sums up the last 26 years. The puzzle pictured here is a Chrstmas gift for my daughter. My tattoo is a watercolor world map. The puzzle connects us. I like meaningful gifts with hidden messages. I buy myself flowers every week. #grandparents #floral #global #puzzles #gifting
