I’m not sure if you’re licensed to rehab but either way, you should teach them to fish. Buy goldfish and put them in there

Can you reinforce or nurture an emotion like anxiety directly? Technically speaking, you can not directly reinforce or nurture an emotion. HOWEVER... You can absolutely reinforce behaviors that indirectly reinforce emotions like fear and anxiety. Whining is a behavior that is associated with fear and/or anxiety. By saying, "it's ok," in a baby voice, giving eye contact (attention), and/or petting a dog who is whining, you are indirectly reinforcing anxiety. Not only that, you are preventing the dog from learning alternative behaviors that would indirectly reduce anxiety. Example: A dog is hyped up, pacing, whining, and can't settle down so the human decides to pet the dog and say it's OK. What if, instead, that person put a leash on the dog and guided the dog to a dog bed and had them stay there so they could settle down. (Preventing physical movement when inside paired with increasing structured exercise is a great recipe for overcoming anxiety.) If the human just baby talks, gives attention, or pets the dog, it not only prevents them from doing something to overcome anxiety, it indirectly reinforces it, trapping the dog in a perpetual state of anxiety. Vet behaviorists and many dog professionals will make blanket statements like, "You can't reinforce an emotion." Technically, no, but as you can see, it can definitely be indirectly reinforced. To be clear, if a dog is in a state of fear, panick, or severe anxiety, I'd absolutely help them in that moment to calm down... but I wouldn't baby them. My goal would be to settle them and then overcome the fear or anxiety, not keep them trapped in it.❤️
