Dinosaur Junction! On the I-70, between Grand Junction and Vail, Colorado (quite near the latter) is Dinosaur Junction. A few roundabouts off the freeway and, voila, you arrive at the #museum founded and run by Billy Doran. Billy has great knowledge of the fossils in the area and the specimens on display. You can see behind us the #theropods #Allosaurus and #Tyrannosaurus rex, the head of the latter is atop an imposing skeleton. A #Velociraptorr skeleton that won’t win any accuracy contest is present, but four-year-olds won’t mind. The #sauropod dubbed #Camarasaurus (to me, this cast appears to be on the #mamenchisaur line) highlights the awe and majesty that #sauropods automatically generate. It makes sense why it is labeled a Cam as they lived in the Late #Jurassic rocks in the surrounding area. The #Stegosaurus tail is the way I like to see ‘em, spikes quite horizontal. It doesn’t make sense to me that an animal with defensive (and offensive) spikes would carry them in such a vertical fashion that the tail would have to rotate 90 degrees to impale an opponent. Having them more horizontal means their normal swing would give them a deadly angle of impact. DinosaurJunction.org is a fun place to enjoy the docent-led tours replete with neat factoids about each specimen. The tours are often led by Billy himself! I especially enjoyed their Triassic exhibit, the clever use of an #alligator skeleton made me grin (keep your eyes peeled when looking at the #phytosaur!). The museum has a nice amount of original teeth and other bone bits from the surrounding area, and a pair of pathological sauropod caudal vertebrae which naturally occupied much of my time :-). Live animals are present, including a gorgeous eyelash gecko (I posted pics of recently) a tortoise and pretty bird provide more delight. #FossilCrates
