The appendix, a tiny organ that is part of the large intestine, can sometimes become inflamed (appendicitis). If left untreated, an inflamed appendix can lead to serious complications. For example, an inflamed appendix can end up rupturing and if this happens, bacteria from the appendix can infect the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritonitis). Peritonitis can quickly lead to sepsis and therefore death due to organ failure. . The function of the human appendix is not totally clear. Traditionally it has been thought that the human appendix is a vestigial organ with no relevant function (we can certainly live pretty normal lives without the appendix). However, recent studies have argued that the appendix may play an important role as an immune organ. As you could see in my video, the appendix contains a fair amount of lymphoid tissue, which is involved in immunity. Studies have also argued that the appendix may serve a role as a reservoir of “good” bacteria, which could be an important repository of the gut microbiota. . After we are done with the digestion of our food and with the absorption of its nutrients, the remaining materials move into the large intestine. As these leftovers transit through the large intestine, its lining absorbs water and electrolytes from them. By the time they reach the rectum, the fecal matter will be compacted and ready to be eliminated by going number 2. I find it amazing that these food leftovers spend approximately 12-48 hours in the large intestine (much longer than in any other part of the digestive tract). . I think one of the most amazing biological facts is that there are enormous amounts of bacteria and other microbes (gut microbiota) living in the mucosa of the large intestine. The importance of the gut microbiota for our health is phenomenal! These microorganisms play super important roles in immunity, metabolic health, and even neurological function! Scientists are still learning about the incredibly important roles that these microorganisms have for our health. . For this video I used a Leica ZOOM 200 stereoscope and an Olympus BX41 microscope at up to 400X magnification. #microscopy #microscope #physiology #largeintestine #appendix #appendicitis #histology #drbioforever
