Yeah but a battery that small would only last about two years. Meaning you would haft to pay $25 vs about a $1. Rather watch battery over new device.

To add wireless charging and a permanent battery would add too much cost to the extreme minor convenience of throwing it on a wireless charger once/yr

Rechargeable batteries don’t have the same energy density as those coin cell batteries so the AirTags would have been a lot bigger to have to do that
