My CI said to me in front of my blockmates, “If mahirap ka, why pursue nursing?” Honestly, I didn’t know what to say. I was dumbfounded, and I couldn’t even process everything she was saying to me at that moment. I am a working student and, at the same time, a nursing student. I go to work once my classes are done, and vice versa. Most of the time, I only get around 5 hours of sleep, sometimes even less. But despite all of that, I continue because becoming a nurse is something I genuinely want. I chose nursing because I want to become a nurse someday, and I am willing to pursue it no matter how difficult or challenging the journey becomes. I was absent for only one day for the entire semester, and that was because my body could no longer keep up. I was extremely tired, and my body simply couldn’t process everything anymore, which was why I wasn’t able to attend that class. I tried to excuse myself, but apparently, it no longer mattered. When I learned that the only excuses being accepted were things like “may anak,” “hinabol ang aso,” or “late nagising,” that was when I started to realize that maybe working wasn’t really considered an option for a nursing student. While I was standing in front of everyone, she told me that if I was working, then I should just work and quit nursing. I understand that attendance is important, especially in nursing. I understand that showing up, even when you are tired, matters. But I also wish people would understand that working while studying does not automatically mean that I am not serious about my education or my future profession. I don’t have low scores. I do well in my exams, and I always try my best to keep up with my academics. I work because I need to support myself with my allowances, projects, and paraphernalia. My kuya helps support my tuition, and my mama helps with my baon when she can, but it is not something I can depend on every day. That is why I work. I work because I don’t want to constantly ask other people for everything I need. I work because I want to contribute to my own education and take responsibility for myself while pursuing the profession I love. Her words struck me, not simply because she said them to me, but because I kept thinking. What if she said those words to someone else? What if another student who is also struggling financially hears that and starts believing that their dream is not meant for them? What if those words become the reason someone gives up? I honestly couldn’t process everything she was saying at that moment. So now I keep asking myself. Is pursuing nursing only for privileged people? Because if it is, then what happens to students who have dreams but have to work twice as hard just to afford the opportunity to pursue them? I know that being a nursing student comes with responsibilities, and I am willing to be accountable for my mistakes. I know that attendance matters, and I know that being a nurse someday requires discipline, commitment, and reliability. But being poor or financially challenged should not mean that they are not allowed to dream. #fypシ #nursing #4u #zyxcba
