@gemsofscience: I am learning to facet gems and for stone 14 I tried to make a pixel cut minecraft diamond (though cut out of blue moissanite). If you'd like to buy the stone it is up in my etsy shop at the link in my bio. This material was trimmed from a rejected puck of industrial silicon carbide grown for use in chips. Unfortunately (for them) they let some atmospheric nitrogen leak in which gave it a dark green rind, and might also be responsible for the very odd blue/yellow dichroic hue. Silicon carbide, aka moissanite, is a star in both the gem world and the world of science. It has incredible properties: ultra high hardness (9.5!), incredible heat resistance, super high luster and dispersion, and it's a semiconductor! Put together that means it's great for making chips and gems alike.
