In **East Africa**, the Anglican Church's origins trace to 1844 with the arrival of Johann Ludwig Krapf, a German pastor and missionary with the Church Missionary Society (CMS), in Mombasa (in present-day Kenya). Remarkably, the first missionaries on behalf of the Anglican Church in East Africa were actually Lutherans, Krapf and his colleague Rebman, who were the only ones willing to go despite the short life expectancy due to malaria. The first native African ministers in Kenya, Ishmael Semler and William Jones, both formerly enslaved, were ordained in 1885 after training in Bombay. Key Bible verses that motivate Anglican mission work include the Great Commission ("Go therefore and make disciples of all nations" - Matthew 28:19-20) and Psalm 16:6 ("The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance"). The translation of the Bible into local languages helped preserve and reinvigorate local culture, and the memory of martyred missionaries and converts played a part in the East African Revival of the 1930s, which gave the Church in East Africa its own vitality and led to dramatic growth.
