*Navigational aids* = anything that helps a vessel figure out
*Navigational aids* = anything that helps a vessel figure out "where am I" and "where's the danger". Think of them as the road signs + GPS of the sea. Here’s how they’re usually grouped: *1. Visual Aids* You see them with your eyes. - *Lighthouses*: Tall fixed towers on shore with powerful lights. Mark headlands, harbor entrances, major dangers. - *Beacons*: Smaller fixed structures on rocks, piles, or shore. Can be lighted or unlighted "daymarks". - *Buoys*: Floating markers anchored to the bottom. Colored + shaped + lighted per IALA rules to mark channels and hazards. - *Dayboards / Daymarks*: Signs on structures with distinctive shapes/colors for daytime ID. *2. Sound Aids* For fog, rain, and night when you can’t see. - *Fog horns*: On lighthouses, platforms, large buoys - *Bells, gongs, whistles*: Often on buoys. Each buoy type can have a unique sound. *3. Electronic / Radio Aids* Work in zero visibility and give position data. - *Radar Beacons - Racon*: When your radar hits them, they reply with a Morse code dot/dash on your radar screen. - *AIS AtoN*: Real and "virtual" buoys that broadcast their name, position, and type to your ship’s AIS display. - *DGPS Beacons*: Shore stations that send corrections to make GPS accurate for harbor approaches. - *VHF Direction Finders*: You can take a bearing to a coast station. *4. Satellite-based Aids* - *GPS / GNSS*: Global positioning from satellites - *e-Navigation & ECDIS*: Electronic charts that overlay your position with all the aids above *5. Published Information Aids* Not physical, but still critical. - *Nautical Charts*: Show depth, hazards, and where all aids are - *Light Lists & Sailing Directions*: Give the light characteristic, range, and details of each aid - *Notices to Mariners*: Updates when a buoy moves or a light changes *How they work together* 1. *Lateral system*: Red/Green buoys tell you which side of the channel you’re on 2. *Cardinal system*: N/S/E/W buoys tell you which side is safe around a danger 3. *Fixed aids*: Lighthouses and beacons give you long-range reference points 4. *Electronic aids*: Confirm everything when you can’t see In West Africa including Guinea, we use *IALA Region A* for buoys: Red = Port side, Green = Starboard side when entering from sea. Want me to go deeper into one group? I can explain how to read buoy colors/lights, or how Racons and AIS AtoNs show up on a radar. #pelautpunyacerita⚓ #pelautpemula #pelautindonesiatiktok #navigation
