@oddpride: Supersonic travel has some real mythological, outsmarting-the-gods energy tbh. #physics #mindblown #aviation #science #funfacts #airplanes

Marky Dee :
So is everything silent for the pilot? Like when they break the sound barrier, there’s no more noise?

oh in my head I was like yeah the boom is only moving away from him so he's not in range

It never occurred to me that the people on the plane wouldn’t even hear it. Does that mean supersonic planes are silent to those on board?

I hope there's no light speed equivalent to a sonic boom or else some alien ships might accidentally pop us out of existence 😂 😂

So you're saying they don't use headphones blasting "Danger Zone" to avoid hearing it?

So, when the pilot reaches mach 1 it suddenly gets silent?

the ol Sonic problem, running faster than light means you're always in darkness

I live in Cornwall, UK and remember hearing the Concorde’s sonic booms when I was younger!

I can’t hear or say “Sonic boom” in anything other than Guile’s voice from street fighter 2

It’s also illegal for military pilots to go supersonic over the US unless given prior permission. Also Sonic booms are not one bang its a rolling boom

Zogg from Betelgeuse :
The pilot will still hear the engines, via the aircraft and cockpit air which move with the pilot.

okay but when they slow down does it catch up to them or does it just disappear because they're not going faster than sound?

Wrong! a Sonic boom happens when a very buffed member of the USA air force moves their arms very fast!!

They are very “fun” when you live in a military supersonic corridor. There is at least one boom a day where I live outside Edwards AFB.

The problem with being faster than the speed of light is that you can only live in darkness 😔😔😔

The sound in the cabin remains normal though. Just the air on the outside is being outran.

For the first few months of commercial Concorde flights, there was no such rule. Ask your older neighbors. It was quite an experience.

Remember, it's not a single bang, it's continuous boom across the flightpath of the plane!

You’re outrunning the plane’s noise. In the cockpit, the air is the same relative speed as you - you can still hear yourself, just not the sonic boom

can you imagine the consequences chasing another plane which subsequently goes supersonic...

Weelll technically that isn't the reason. They don't hear it because the shockwave never reaches them, since they are at the center of the shockwave
