All things considered, he went out a little peacefully and it would have been way better than what Soldier boy could have done to him. Soldier boy would have tortured him until died. I honestly think it black noir tried to negotiate with homelander why Soldier boy was pure evil and actually tried to convince he might have stood a chance surviving and living through all of this. but this was a bittersweet moment.
