It depends on the type of opener, there's more than one style. The one you have is indeed designed to remove the whole top like that, but the old classic like in my picture is meant to be used "the wrong way", as you stated.

that’s fair but when you do it sideways you can use the lid as a strainer and don’t have to worry about anything else
