@epicgardening: Building a modern suburban homestead can take many forms - you can do it for nearly $0 like @jacquesinthegarden did, you can splurge on some key features you LOVE like I (Kevin) did with my pond and chicken coop, or you can slowly inch your way towards your sustainability goals over the years. All are valid! When I first moved into this home, it was a bare lot - a thin layer of woodchips strewn over a sod-scraped 1/3 of an acre. Slowly, I added systems to help me transform the landscape - rainwater capture systems, a pond, greywater recycling, chickens, solar energy, and more. It was overwhelming at first - I had NO experience in any of these things besides gardening! So over the last two years I've put together a book called Epic Homesteading, which chronicles exactly how I built out this space, with options for ALL budgets.
