Our usual indoor seed start for cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli is usually around end of march through April and they are then transplanted outdoors by May. We decided to test out if we can grow these plants earlier, so we germinated our seeds beginning of February. Without adequate lighting and cool temperature, these plants can easily bolt. They are very finicky to seed start. We maintained a temperature of 15-18°C (50 -64.4°F) in our grow tent inside the garage. This made a huge difference. By first week of April, we had moved them into the greenhouse and kept it there for about a week. The plants were really big at this point and from our experience, we knew they can handle frost and would easily adapt to the cooler Spring weather. Smaller plants should be protected from frost by covering them with empty pots. Cauliflowers benefit from cooler days. Heads form best with regular watering either twice a week or deep watering once a week. We do our best to prevent the soil from drying out.
