Your "every other week cleaning" is with bleach and it's to keep mold from growing. The vinegar clean is for mineral buildup, which is what you see.

You can buy an additional filter. You put it in place of that square screen. Then use reverse osmosis or distilled water

DO NOT BUY. Have one failed at 15 months. Thank god for square trade warranty. Got full refund. Ge kicks you to opal & opal p poor customer support. GREAT WHEN IT WORKS.
