how do you just wander off and nobody notices anything? I've said for years his unit let him go. if he just wandered off...who was on guard duty. he put his equipment on his cot...nobody saw that?

I'm sure there was a military jury present during the trial and they convicted him. The judge just set the penalty based on his actions.
