@redwiresg: We've always loved Tan Kin Lian and just recently lobbied for him to run for president! Tan has been quietly ramping up his bid for the presidency through the multitude of posts (including those involving a crystall ball, or CB, and his late lao peh) on his Facebook page. He has said he wants to be an active president instead just a ceremonial one, and has pledged to help bring down the cost of living in Singapore. But applying for a the COE isn't enough - prospective candidates must also turn up at the nomination centre in person on Nomination Day to submit their nomination papers and other necessary certificates. Tan has said that he will wait for the (PEC) to decide on the eligibility of the other two prospective independent candidates, George Goh and Ng Kok Song, before he makes his decision on whether to submit his nomination papers. But if Tan does not contest and both Goh and Ng are disqualified, former DPM and PAP-endorsed candidate Tharman will be handed a walkover similar to his ex-colleague Halimah Yacob in PE2017. There is reason for him to worry - he embarrasingly lost his deposit in PE2011 despite an eclectic "High-Five" campaign. He was also criticised together with Tan Jee Say for "splitting the votes", which enabled PAP-endorsed candidate Tony Tan to beat the People's Favourite Dr Tan Cheng Bock by less than a 1 percent margin. But with Goh and Ng proving to be disappointing independent candidates this time, Singaporeans are hoping that Tan is not playing coy about his intention to contest. Amongst them, he is the only one who has actively spoke up for Singaporeans - slamming the government's changes to the CPF withrawal rule, the MediShield scheme, the impact of the Hyflux collapse on everyday investors, the mismanagement of SMRT, amongst others.
