@cbcvancouver: The City of Vancouver has proclaimed Aug. 1 Emancipation Day — the day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire — and is encouraging residents to fight against anti-Black racism and discrimination. The federal government voted unanimously to officially recognize Aug. 1 as Emancipation Day across Canada in March 2021. In this video clip, the director of the Institute for the Black and African Diaspora at Simon Fraser University, June Francis, and North Vancouver resident Christene Best recognize the importance of the day while calling for more education on the history of Black Canadians. #emancipactionday #beingblackincanada #blackhistory #britishcolumbia #cbcnews
