I've just had a pay-per-chat haircut consultation and I'm bothered. Booked myself into a new to me salon after being influenced by a very convincing Instagram reel. £280 for high voltage highlights, a fancy name to say it's more than a full head because they pack the foils in for maximum impact, a toner, Olaplex and a cut. Fair enough. Paid the 50% deposit, no problem. Deposits that are coming off the final bill for the service are completely reasonable. I left a booking note saying I'd pop in for a skin test before the appointment. Instead, they called me and booked me in for a consultation as well. I arrived and filled out 3 sides of A4 of what felt like an application for MI5. My Name, Date of birth, Email, My Social media handle and that does not affect my hair, What bands shampoo I use. What conditioner I use, Styling products I use, Do I swim? Do I go to the gym? Ten years of hair history, that I have no Allergies, have I ever had Keratin treatments or Perms ect, am I pregnant, when I was last pregnant, sign that I'm okay if my clothes get ruined ect. some questions are relevant some felt too much. At one point I thought they were about to ask for my National Insurance number and blood type. Then came the consultation. "I'd like lots of highlights packed onto my head since my roots are growing out. I like my toner cool, a Purple/Grey cool toner is good I don't mind it and enjoy the fade out to cool blonde. Sometimes I have my hair up so the back is prefer not to be neglected." "Perfect. I can do that for you." Three hours later... ding, notification, an email receipt. Consultation: £5. They'd quietly pinched it from my deposit. Now look, it's only a fiver. This isn't about affording it. It's the principle. Charging me £5 to tell you what I want done during a £280 appointment feels like Ryanair introducing a conversation fee. "Lovely to meet you... that'll be £5." I've never been charged for explaining how I want my hair done before. Usually that's just... customer service? I'll keep the appointment because I'm already committed, but it's left such a bad taste that I'm already thinking it'll be my first and last visit.
