And when I made these faux concrete planters this spring I again opted for random filling instead of dirt. I love to change out my front porch plants seasonally so choosing filling over dirt makes the swapping process easier. We already have plans to plant these evergreen trees somewhere else come the end of the season, when I swap them for the faux fall maple trees I made for our front porch. In the past, I’ve used Spanish moss to top the planters, but I thought it looked a little hairy when combined with these evergreens, so I opted for small marble rocks. I used packing filler from the treadmill we got this spring to fill these big pots and Roger kept joking as I filled them that it was a good thing we finally got a treadmill so I had filling for these planters. (I repurposed the packing filler and have alternative repurposing options and additional tips in my blog post.) Since I didn’t plant it in dirt I will need to water it more often, but since it’s just rocks I can easily water it and quickly change out the plants as needed.
