Retired People Pleaser here… I saw a post about how “people pleasers” aren’t actually worried about it pleasing people. It may look like it, but we’re actually using this as a temporary bandaid to settle down the shame within. If we say yes, or if we put ourselves last and if we perform, and we burn out, it’s better to us to do that rather than feel that shame. With that being said, the way I learned to not be a people pleaser all the time was literally learning through the shame. Saying no, putting myself first, treating myself right, giving myself grace and gentleness… and feeling the shame & guilt that came with it. I had to remind myself that this wasn’t healthy shame or guilt. You have the ability to feel it and work through it.
