Many of you know I’ve done a few videos on immigration now. And I’m sure you can imagine, but I’ve had so many “hilarious” comments, no doubt from bots, but some undoubtedly from ignorant and uneducated folks who bought the propaganda. You may have noticed I used the word “hilarious” in air quotes, and that’s because they might be hilarious if it wasn’t for them being incredibly sad. The one theme I’m gonna key in on for this video is the narrative that these commenters aren’t against immigration, but…and whenever you see a “but”, folks, you know the punchline is coming. It tells you that they led with a deliberately chosen defense specifically to disarm you and make you think they’re agreeing with you, and the next line or lines are how they actually feel. In other words, you can literally disregard everything they said before the “but” and what remains is their truth. They start by building a statement that has a lie and also a truth. Except they want you to think the first statement is the truth, when in reality it’s the lie. In other words, they “pose” both statements as truth, when in fact only the second part is true. That’s how narcissists operate. Anyway, I digress. A bunch of comments on my immigration videos follow a theme. It goes like this: “I’m fine with immigration, but, immigrants need to accept our culture.” In other words, they expect these immigrants to assimilate into a Canadian way of life. You know, the way their ancestors assimilated into Indigenous culture when they arrived here. The way their ancestors learned Ojibwe or Cree. Accepted Indigenous religious values and traditions. Except none of those things actually happened, did they? Nosiree, Bob. What happened is, their European ancestors insisted Indigenous people assimilate into their European culture. Speak English. Adopt Christianity. And that would be hilarious if it wasn’t sad. And then they scream: “but that was then and this is now! Jesus, why can’t people just get over it and move on!” Um, ok, Karen. We can’t just “move on.” Why? Because the same exact things are happening right now, that’s why. You, today, are demanding immigrants assimilate into your culture. Learn and speak English. Adopt Christianity. And you don’t see the absolute hypocrisy in that? I know you don’t, or you’d sit the eff down, acknowledge the harms of the past and work to make sure such things never happen again. Instead, you’re repeating it. Over and over and over, ad nauseum. And have you ever noticed that the majority of people with this type of attitude are conservative? Yeah, it’s not a coincidence. Because conservative “values” are twisted. They claim to be the party of freedom, but only if it’s their freedom or to follow their values. They claim to advocate for families and freedom, while striving to strip away the freedoms of anyone who isn’t white, straight and Christian. They claim to ascribe to a Country where there is limited government control, while they advocate for a government to legislate their religion in schools or their values in society. To legislate who can love who or what books folks can read. And again, that would be hilarious if it wasn’t sad. So, to be clear, no one has the right to tell another person where they should live. Nor how they should live. I’m all for freedom. Actual freedom. A freedom that says, you’re free to worship who and how you see fit; and love who you choose to love; and speak you mother tongue; and live where you choose to live; and not to be discriminated against regardless of gender, skin colour, sexual orientation, religion, language, or culture…and so is everyone else. We have a Charter of Rights and Freedoms that guarantees that. It’s just sad that too many people feel they have the right to tell anyone else where they get to live or insist they accept, adopt, and assimilate into their culture.
