Sometimes in veterinary medicine I observe a tendency to “let some things go” in our geriatric patients. Sometimes this is client motivated but it can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking well it’s just an old dog. I have found the SAGDVS Senior Dog CE for veterinary professionals extremely helpful in navigating these and other issues in geriatric canine patients. It is 7hr RACE approved CE created by vets who are passionate about this important group of our patients. DRMOLLY50TT gets you $50 off this wonderful new CE which is in my links above Here are some reasons why in many of these cases earlier intervention can increase BOTH the quality and quantity of life in these older dogs. 1. Heart murmurs do not tell us exactly what’s going on in the heart, they are simply a sign of disrupted blood flow through the heart. A thorough cardiac work up allows us to identify the cause and in many cases prolong onset of heart failure. 2. Unintentional weight loss and muscle wasting are two signs of several possible disease processes and can be our first clue for these issues. Biannual physical exams, close attention to these parameters and routine lab work especially when these symptoms will catch manageable diseases earlier. 3. Dental disease is a major source of pain and discomfort for our patients. In many cases dental exams, cleanings and appropriate extractions are a vital part of improving quality of life in elderly patients. Risks and benefits to these procedures should be weighed carefully! Prevention and early intervention are key. Waiting for it to get worse is usually not a good plan! 4. Coughing and exercise intolerance is NOT normal in any patient! There are several possible reasons for these symptoms and it is always appropriate to offer a full work up for these symptoms. #sgdvs #seniordogdocs #seniordog #seniordogs #veterinary #veterinarian #vetlife #vetstudent #vettok #vettechtok
