It’s weird how certain places become important without you realizing it while you’re actually living through them. At the time, it was just your seat in English class. You probably complained about being tired, whispered to your friends when you were supposed to be paying attention, tried not to laugh when the room was completely silent, watched the clock move impossibly slowly, and counted down the minutes until class ended. Nothing about those seats felt historic. 😭 But then enough time passes and suddenly you’d give anything to sit there for one random Tuesday again. Not because English class itself was necessarily that incredible, but because of who you were when you sat there and who was sitting around you. Those seats witnessed friendships forming, inside jokes that made absolutely no sense to anybody else, conversations about crushes, weekend plans, drama that felt like the end of the world at the time, and moments you didn’t know would eventually become memories. That’s the strange thing about growing up: you rarely recognize the “good old days” while they’re happening. You’re always waiting for the next thing. Graduation. College. Moving out. Getting the job. Starting your adult life. Then one day you realize there are classrooms you’ll never walk into again, people you used to see five days a week who you haven’t spoken to in years, and routines that disappeared without anybody announcing that you were experiencing them for the last time. Somebody else eventually sits in your seat, probably complaining about the same assignments and watching the same clock, completely unaware that an entirely different little world existed in that exact spot before them. And someday they’ll leave too. Maybe that’s why nostalgia hits so hard. It isn’t necessarily that everything was better back then. It’s realizing how temporary everything was when it once felt permanent. So yeah, I hope whoever sits in those seats makes memories too. I hope they laugh when they’re supposed to be quiet, meet people they’ll remember years later, and have ordinary days that eventually become strangely precious. And I hope every once in a while we remember that the places we’re sitting in right now might someday be places we’d give anything to visit one more time.
