Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday distanced herself from President Biden’s recent comments in which he appeared to call supporters of former President Trump “garbage.” “First of all, he clarified his comments, but let me be clear: I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for,” she told reporters at Joint Base Andrews. “You heard my speech last night and continuously throughout career. I believe that the work that I do is about representing all the people, whether they support me or not.” In a virtual call with Voto Latino on Tuesday night, President Biden appeared to criticize either Trump supporters or comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” during Mr. Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday. “The only garbage I see floating out there are his supporters, his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and it’s un-American,” the president said. The White House transcript used “supporter’s” rather than “supporters” — and the president put out a statement on social media saying that he meant Mr. Hinchcliffe, not Trump supporters writ large. “Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage — which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation,” President Biden wrote. The president’s comments set off a firestorm and were reminiscent of Hillary Clinton’s remark during her 2016 presidential campaign when she said “half” of Mr. Trump’s supporters could fit into a “basket of deplorables.” #kamalaharris #joebiden #donaldtrump #cspan
