2 more eggs from this nest hatched a cpl of days after the first one i showed y’all last week! This nest in particular is an interesting one. Babies RARELY survive in it long enough to leave it. Im not sure if it is the same mother using it every time 🤨 It might be that it is very much exposed and not very protected… but im not sure. The 3 times ive seen this nest used in the last year, I’ve witnessed babies falling out and snapping their necks in the branches at a very early age- within 10 days of hatching. They don’t ever leave the nest that soon so im wondering if predators are flying in and pulling them out. POV it’s your first time kayaking during manatee season and a mating herd suddenly blows through the area; what do you do?! Exactly what this paddler did! Pick up your paddle, sit still, and allow them to move through without disruption. Once passed, gently paddle away to give them all the space they need to do their thing. We keep at minimum one kayak length (above and beside) manatees at all times but sometimes you can’t help it when they come to you. That is okay!!! The most important thing to do is remain calm and respectful to avoid disrupting their course. It IS possible to safely, legally and respectfully share waterways with manatees and it is up to us as decent humans to ensure it stays that way. #manateeseason #manatees #wildlife #underwatertiktok #underwater #manatee #animals #florida #kayaking
