My view every morninh
We tested three garden beds: one “no dig,” one lasagna, and one using what I call the native soil method (tilling and cover cropping and then planting right in). I know that there are good intentions behind the no dig theory of limiting soil disturbance, and I agree that tilling every year is a bad idea. But there are downsides to using excess compost, as we found in this experiment. It can be very difficult to know what’s in compost if you are buying it, and most of the bulk and bagged composts contain high levels of salt and phosphorus (especially ones containing animal manures or mushroom compost). If you can make a lot of compost at home that’s great, but I see so many plastic bags of unknown soil ingredients getting tossed onto beds this time of year in the name of “soil health” and it concerns me! before going out and spending a lot of money on compost or soils, without knowing the contents, please consider spending some money to get a basic soil test, so that you can make an informed decision based on your existing soil! Our best performing garden bed has been the one that has been completely unamended anything except for our alfalfa fertilizer recipe. We will post both of the videos going more into depth on this information in our bio, so head over there to see the full results of the soils tests! we actually conducted Haney tests on these beds, so that we could learn more about what had happened to the soil life as a result of the tilling, as that is what we are usually trying to avoid by doing these no till methods. And surprisingly, the soil respiration in the tilled bed actually was better than the no dig bed. (HOWEVER WE ARE STILL AGAINST TILLING EACH YEAR, just do it once to establish the bed!). My theory is that by applying so much cardboard and compost to the top of the soil, we are actually smothering out a lot of that vital soil life. Let me know your questions! #notill #garden #nodig #soilhealth #gardening #phosphorus
