One of many small one-off red pots made for my next round of firings. This clay is wickedly coarse and is a pain in more than one way to work with, the other greatest difficulty being the simple fact that is stains everything it touches, yet there’s no pearl without grit, and this nicely discovered combination of clay and the crimson glaze that’ll eventually coat it, have led to some of my favourite vessels I’ve made in a while. If you scroll back in my feed a short while you’ll find two angular vases side-by-side, this is how this angular urn will fire. It’s called PF 690, the groggy red stoneware, and to make my life somewhat easier, (less painful), I blend it down by 50% with another, much smoother clay. The colour doesn’t seem to be affected too much, it dulls down slightly, but I’m sure it’s the high reduction firing that’s doing most of the work in terms of diminishing the red tone. Either way, I can’t wait to see this lot fired. It’s so exciting to have new materials and surfaces emerge from the kiln, it’s been a while since I’ve been this eager to begin glazing. #pottery #jar #urn #wheelthrownpottery #stoneware #clay
