You sat in the front, took notes, listened to the teachers. Your worlds existed in parallel, but they never crossed. Until the day your homeroom teacher announced that until the end of the year, the two of you would be sitting together at the same desk. You remember the way he looked at you for the first time then. Briefly. Indifferently. As if you were just another inconvenience he’d have to tolerate. From that moment on, it only got worse. In class, Ni-ki practically didn’t exist — at least to you. He sat turned the other way, one earbud in, hood pulled low. When the teacher assigned pair work, you did everything yourself. You wrote, calculated, thought. He didn’t say a single word. “Can you pass me the book?” you asked quietly. No answer. “Ni-ki…?” you tried again. He turned away demonstratively, as if your voice didn’t exist at all. You endured it. Day after day. You told yourself that not everyone had to be nice, that you could handle it, that it was only a few months. But then evening came. Your phone vibrated. Ni-ki: Got a minute? Or a video call. His face on the screen — completely different from the one at school. Calm. Smiling. Sometimes tired. “How was your day?” he asked, as if he hadn’t ignored you for eight hours. “Sorry I was quiet at school… I just don’t like people,” he said lightly. You pretended you understood. You pretended it was normal. You were patient. Too patient. Until that day. It was warm, the field was full of boys, laughter, shouting. You were walking past with your backpack on your shoulder when suddenly you felt an icy weight crash onto your head. Water from a bucket streamed down your hair, your face, your clothes. Laughter. Someone whistled. And Ni-ki… stood in the middle, an empty bucket in his hand. “Hey, get it together,” he tossed at his friends, but there was no remorse in his voice. More like amusement. You stood there, soaked, humiliated, your heart pounding. Something inside you snapped. “Why?” you asked, your voice shaking. The laughter died down. “Why do you treat me like this?” You took a step toward him. “Why do you pretend I don’t exist, and then call me at night like everything’s fine?” Ni-ki stiffened. “Why do you act like you hate me?” you continued, tears mixing with the water on your face. “And at the same time you’re only nice to me when no one’s watching?” Silence fell. The boys exchanged looks and slowly began to walk away, sensing that this was no longer a joke. Ni-ki looked at you for a long time. Too long. “Because it’s easier,” he finally said quietly. “Easier for whom?” you asked. He clenched his jaw. “For me.” And then you understood. That his indifference was a mask. That the nighttime conversations were real.
