Today is the anniversary of the day I brought Aurora home. She was surrendered at just over a year old. Her previous owner, who had good intentions when he bought her, had just moved into a small apartment and started medical school. He no longer had the time and space she needed so he made the difficult decision to rehome her. At the time, I had no idea what to expect. I fell in love with Aurora from the moment I saw her. My husband and I realized she was here to stay after about 2 weeks, but we didn’t make it official for several months. Making the decision to have a macaw, while it has been a dream of mine for some time, was not easy. I knew that giving a bird that big everything it needs would be expensive and time consuming. She has been worth every bit of it though. All I can say is, to those watching videos of people with their macaws and thinking how cool it would be to have one…. don’t jump into it without truly understanding what it is to have a bird of this size in your home. A lack of research is (in my opinion) the number one reason birds are rehomed. I do feel if more people knew what they were getting into, and what is required to keep these beautiful creatures happy, less people would buy them because they would realize that maybe a bird (especially a macaw) isn’t for them. We changed our lives for her (and all of our birds). Please don’t buy a bird on a whim. Do your research and remember that you are bringing a wild animal with wild instincts into your home. Love, Jen 💚 #rescue #macaw #aurora #1year
