@soulaansuperior: They were only allowed to care for Black servicemen in segregated hospital wards. However, they also cared for German prisoners of war: they found interacting with the enemy to be deeply troubling. It had taken decades for them to be admitted into the Army Nurse Corps, and it felt like a betrayal to be assigned to care for the enemy. Despite Black soldiers' eagerness to fight, Jim Crow laws were implemented in the armed forces as well as abroad. "The treatment they received by white officers was horrendous" says professor Matthew Delmont "They were in slave-like conditions, treated like animals, called racial epithets and not afforded respect either as soldiers or human beings." #blacknurses #nurses #blacksoilders #soilders #worldwarii #war #serve #fight #aid #vintage #BlackHistory #40s #throwback #africanamerican #africanamericanculture #africanamericanhistory #soulaan #fyp
