One of the best things about living in Santa Cruz and much of coastal California is that we can grow food almost year-round! While summer gets all the gardening attention, fall and winter are actually some of the BEST times to grow delicious, nutrient-dense vegetables. 🌿 **Here's what you can grow in your winter garden:** 🥬 **Leafy greens:** Kale, lettuce, arugula, spinach, mizuna, mustard greens, bok choy, tatsoi, and Swiss chard. 🥦 **Brassicas:** Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and collard greens. 🥕 **Root vegetables:** Carrots, radishes, beets, turnips, and parsnips. 🌱 **Herbs & more:** Cilantro, parsley, chives, green onions, peas, and sorrel. **A few winter gardening facts you might not know:** ❄️ Many leafy greens, especially kale, develop a sweeter flavor after exposure to cold temperatures as their sugar balance changes. 🌧️ Winter rainfall can reduce the need for irrigation, although plants still need good drainage and occasional watering during dry spells. 🥦 Broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts all belong to the same species, *Brassica oleracea*, selectively bred over generations for different edible parts! 🌿 Cilantro actually prefers cooler weather and is less likely to bolt than when grown during the heat of summer. 🌱 Peas thrive in cool weather, and as legumes, they can form relationships with soil bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen. The secret to a successful winter garden? **Plant early enough for crops to establish before the shortest, coolest days of the year.** Growth slows as daylight decreases, so timing makes a big difference! Here in Scotts Valley and the Santa Cruz Mountains, our mild Mediterranean climate gives us an incredible opportunity to keep growing and harvesting through the cooler months, with a little extra frost protection when needed. So don't put those gardening gloves away just yet! 🧤🌿 **What's growing in your winter garden this year?** Tell us in the comments! 👇 📌 Save this for your fall and winter planting inspiration! #WinterGardening #CaliforniaGardening #SantaCruzGardening #GrowYourOwnFood #CoolSeasonCrops
