@magebymoonlight: There is a true wealth of folklore about household spirits from throughout Europe.⁣ ⁣⁣ Many of these tales detail how spirits like the wag-at-the-wa’ (Scotland), the brownie (England), or the nisse or tomte (Scandinavia) would perform helpful tasks around the home, and bring general good fortune and wealth to the household.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ They were said to be especially fond of animals and children, watching over them in the night and offering protection.⁣ ⁣ Unlike many similar spirits, such as faeries, household spirits live in close proximity to humans (i.e. in homes or barns) rather than in the wilds, and may even travel with families from one home to another.⁣ ⁣ Sadly, respect for these helpful house spirits diminished during the Middle Ages, and new practices were developed to keep them out of the home (such as carving crosses into the pot hooks, which would cause them to flee).⁣ ⁣ It is said that swinging a pot hook over the hearth will invite this type of spirit back into the home.⁣ ⁣ Keeping household spirits happy is usually as simple as providing them with a cozy place to rest (whether a pot hook, a place by the hearth, or a spirit house) and sharing occasionally offerings of cakes, oatmeal, or milk with honey.⁣ ⁣ That said, certain behaviors can make them angry and cause them to leave or become mischievous.
