🐝 These cute fuzzy little pollinators sure do look like bees… but they are actually flies! 🪰 Bee flies (family Bombyliidae) are true flies (order Diptera), not bees! They evolved to mimic bees so predators leave them alone. This is called Batesian mimicry! 🌸 They are important pollinators! Despite being flies, many species are excellent pollinators and visit flowers constantly for nectar. (as you can definitely see here haha!) 😄 They have permanently silly faces. 🤭 Their long “straw” mouthpart (proboscis) sticks straight out from their face, giving them a cute and cartoonish look. ☺️ 🚁 They can hover like tiny helicopters! Bee flies can hover in front of flowers with incredible precision while sipping nectar mid-air. They also resemble teeny tiny hummingbirds! 🧸 They are extremely fuzzy! Not only is it extremely cute, but it also helps them look more like bees, collect pollen, and stay warm in cool spring weather! 🥚 They throw their eggs into other insects’ homes. Females don’t gently place eggs. Instead, they flick or catapult eggs into: Ground-nesting bee burrows, Wasp nests, and Beetle larvae tunnels. No landing required! 🐛 Their babies are parasites! Bee fly larvae are parasitoids. They hatch inside the host nest and eat the host larva. A little dark… but very effective. 💀 🌼 They love early spring flowers, like these hawthorne blossoms! You’ll often see them before many bees are active, visiting: Dandelions, Wildflowers, and other Early blooms. They’re some of the first pollinators of the year! 🌍 There are over 5,000 species worldwide! They’re incredibly diverse, found on every continent except Antarctica. 🪽 Their wings often have cool patterns. Many species have spotted, banded, or smoky wings that look like stained glass! 😍 🧭 They rarely land. Bee flies prefer to hover and sip rather than perch. If they do land, it’s usually very briefly. 😌 They don’t sting or bite They’re completely harmless to humans. No stinger, no bite just vibes. ✌️ 🐝 Predators get confused. Birds and lizards think: “That’s a bee, I’m not risking it.” But it’s just a soft, harmless fly in a bee costume! 🌞 They are sun lovers. You’ll see them on warm, sunny, spring days! Those are my favorite days too! 🥰 #beefly #bugs #entomology #pollinators #flies
