Everyone tells you Japan is expensive. It's the opposite right now. Here's my real budget breakdown for 2 weeks, every line itemized. ✈️ Flights are the one place not to overpay. Direct US to Tokyo runs $1,200 to $1,800 round trip, but one stop through Seoul or Taipei drops it to $650 to $850. I booked 9 weeks out and paid $720. That alone covers 10 full days of food on the ground. 🏨 I averaged $55 a night for 14 nights. Capsule hotels in Tokyo go for $30 to $40, business hotels in Kyoto sit around $75 to $90. I mixed both, capsules in the big cities, business hotels in the smaller stops. Total: $770. 🍜 Food is way cheaper than you think. Konbini breakfast $4, a bowl of ramen $8 to $9, izakaya dinner with drinks $15 to $20. I averaged $20 a day and ate incredibly well. Two weeks of eating like a king for $280. 🚄 Transport: skip the JR Pass if you're only hitting 2 cities. An IC card plus 2 single Shinkansen tickets (Tokyo to Kyoto, Osaka to Tokyo) came to about $200. The 2-week pass is $440 and only pays off with 4+ cities. Skipping it saved me $240. One thing that almost wrecked my whole trip: connectivity. Generic eSIMs like Airalo, Holafly and Ubigi, plus public WiFi, block TikTok, Instagram and your banking apps the second you land in Japan. Personally, I use esimjp.com, an eSIM built for Japan. Every app works, and you activate it in 2 minutes before you fly. 💰 Grand total: $2,030 for 14 days, around $145 a day all in. That's 14 nights in Japan vs maybe 3 nights in New York. Do the math.
